Meditation for the Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost October 25, 2020. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.’ [Matthew 22:37-40] Sunday’s gospel tells of the religious authorities challenging Jesus to choose between the Law as it is written in the Book of Deuteronomy and as it is written in the Book of Leviticus. Jesus’ response is in line with traditional Rabbinic teaching. Even as he recites the commandments, Jesus reminds the Pharisees--and us—that righteousness---living in right relationship with God—involves more than following the rules. It involves choosing an honest and self-giving relationship with God and with the people God has called to walk with us. And, perhaps the greater challenge for most of us, it involves allowing ourselves to be loved, accepting the love that is the core of being fully alive, as necessary—and as available-- as the air we breathe. How do we love, and allow ourselves to be loved? W. Paul Jones, tells a story that illustrates this point in Teaching the Dead Bird to Sing (Brewster, MA: Paraclete Press, pp. xi-xii). One year when he was living in an apartment in Kansas City, he heard a scratching at the window. He looked out and saw a mourning dove inspecting the window ledge for a spot where she might make a nest. Day by day he saw her build a nest just big enough for one egg, and then to sit on it. One morning he woke up to see the mother feeding her new infant. But often when spring comes early to Kansas City, as it did that year, the temperature plunges suddenly and freezing rain destroys the newly flowering trees. About a week after the baby bird had been born, one of these storms swept through the city. Jones spent a restless night, worried about his 2 tiny friends; when he awoke at about dawn, he was relieved to hear the dove cooing. But when he peaked out the window he saw that the mother bird had propped upright her small infant-bird, frozen. Patiently and insistently, she was trying to teach the dead bird to sing. Jones tells this story to illustrate the insistent faithfulness of God’s love for us-- even when our hearts feel like they are frozen hard. even when we are overcome by the freezing rains that pummel us, that come upon us without notice and seem to take away all that matters to us. God is like that mother bird. God won’t give up on us--even when we give up on God. When we direct our own lives to be loving offerings to God and to our neighbor, we need to ask ourselves if our real purpose is to make ourselves lovable rather than to reveal God’s love. We need to be the mourning dove who never loses sight of the life of her baby bird, but we also need to be the frozen one who allows God to melt our hearts through the kindness and insight of someone else. Go, be healing to God's people; seek and share the saving call. Be the touch of Christ for others, be the voice of Christ for all. Lives are broken all around you, and Christ has no hands but yours; hold in them the ones who suffer so Christ's healing love endures. -Martin Willett Sunday Schedule for the Months of October & November 8-8:30 am Outdoor service of Holy Communion in the parking lot 9 am Morning Prayer on Zoom 9:30 am Zoom Coffee Hour 9:45 am Zoom Sunday School meets: grades pre-K - 5 10am–10:30 am Zoom Sunday School Class: grades pre-K - 5 10:45-11:15 am - Zoom Sunday School Class - grades 6-8 10:30-11:30 am Distribution of Holy Communion to individuals in the church Sunday afternoon - Home Communion for those who cannot come to the church MORNING PRAYER via ZOOM Ministers of the Liturgy The Rev. Meditation for the Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost October 18, 2020 I am the Lord, and there is no other. I form light and create darkness, I make weal and create woe; I the Lord do all these things. [Isaiah 45:6-7] Anthony Mello tells the story of a wandering teacher who had reached the outskirts of a village and settled down under a tree for the night when a villager came running up to him and said, “The stone! The stone! Give me the precious stone!” “What stone?” asked the teacher. “Last night an angel appeared to me in a dream, “ said the villager, “and told me that if I went to the outskirts of the village at dusk I would find a teacher who would give ma precious stone that would make me rich forever.” The teacher rummaged in his bag and pulled out a stone. “He probably meant this one,” he said, as he handed the stone over to the villager. “I found it on a forest path some days ago. You can certainly have it.” The villager gazed at the stone in wonder. It was a diamond, probably the largest diamond in the whole world, for it was as large as a person’s head. He took the diamond and walked away. All night he tossed about in bed, unable to sleep. Next day at the crack of dawn he woke the teacher and said, “Give me the wealth that makes it possible for you to give this diamond away so easily.”[1] Isaiah promises this “wealth” of the peace that comes from believing that God is the single source of life, in its darkness and its light, in storm and calm. If we trust in the goodness of God, we will be free from the distractions of fear and second-guessing our decisions. Spoken to the King of Persia, these words also warn us that we will be held accountable for overreaching. According to the Gospel of Matthew this is the image of God that Jesus teaches. It is a theology that has been explained well by Bruce C. Birch: Israel's God is defined first and foremost by divine freedom and not by the fate of any particular culture or nation. This conception of the radical freedom of God emerges in opposition to the nationally defined gods of imperial triumphalism in Egypt. The God of covenant is so free that God can choose to enter relationship with a people who are merely a band of slaves with no standing, no power, no influence in the world. This God is defined by freely offered compassion to those who, by the world's definition, are the helpless, the oppressed, and the dispossessed. - Bruce C. Birch, "You Shall Be My People" (Sojourners, May 1984) Yes, God is present in the smallest and least important of persons and circumstances. Yes, our longing for security and our greed begin in our feeling of helplessness. Yes, God’s rule will prevail even beyond the instability in our own nation. Yes, the wealth of the peace we seek is our capacity to trust and to hope. Beyond our understanding you alone are God; you speak to a world of brutal rule and shallow indifference, of arms fairs and reality shows: may the one who came to sit at table with the victimized and excluded disturb our barren peace and call us to another feast where only love may rule; through Jesus Christ, the bridegroom. Amen. -from Prayers for an Inclusive Church [1] Anthony De Mello. The Song of the Bird. New York: Doubleday, 1984., p.. 140-41. Meditation for the Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost October 11, 2020 Columbus Day Weekend: Prayers from Indigenous Peoples On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear. . . . This is the Lord for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation. [Isaiah 25:6, 8] This Sunday we will include prayers from various Native American traditions in both our services. The celebration of the harmonious order of creation in the Native American tradition echoes strikingly the vision of salvation described in Isaiah. This passage from Isaiah is a song of praise to God, creator of the universe, whose peace will prevail over the most destructive forces at work in the world. Prayers in the Native American tradition express the resolve to grow into this harmony and affirm the dynamic balance that is inherent in creation. The essence of human life, in this tradition is what Scripture call “righteousness”: intuitive and trusting alignment with the divine Spirit of life that is the source of beauty and harmony in the tiniest realms of life. The prayers and Scripture on Sunday create a space where we can find our way through the imbalance that we face every day in our political discourse. In this space may we be restored to our true relationship with God so that our decisions may be guided by the Holy Spirit and so that the peace beyond understanding may fill our hearts. O Great Spirit, whose voice I hear in the winds and whose breath gives life to all the world, hear me. I come before you, one of your children. I am small and weak. I need your strength and wisdom. Let me walk in beauty and make my eyes ever behold the red and purple sunset. Make my hands respect the things you have made, my ears sharp to hear your voice. Make me wise, so that I may know the things you have taught my people, the lessons you have hidden in every leaf and rock. I seek strength, not to be superior to my brothers and sisters, but to be able to fight my greatest enemy: myself. Make me ever ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes, so that when life fades as a fading sunset, my spirit may come to you without shame. Meditation for the Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost Feast of St. Francis of Assisi October 4, 2020In preparation for Sunday I want to share one of the most famous stories about St. Francis of Assisi. Sunday will be the feast of St. Francis, the day when we traditionally asks God’s blessing on all animals, especially on our pets. Most importantly, we renew our relationship with all living beings and we make the commitment to see the goodness in others. We have been taught to recognize the wolf in sheep’s clothing. In these days, however, it is crucial that we recognize the sheep in wolf’s clothing. St. Francis and the Wolf Perhaps the most famous story of Francis is when he tamed a wolf that was terrorizing the people of Gubbio. While Francis was staying in that town he learned of a wolf so ravenous that it was not only killing and eating animals, but people, too. The people took up arms and went after it, but those who encountered the wolf perished at its sharp teeth. Villagers became afraid to leave the city walls. Francis had pity on the people and decided to go out and meet the wolf. He was desperately warned by the people, but he insisted that God would take care of him. A brave friar and several peasants accompanied Francis outside the city gate. But soon the peasants lost heart and said they would go no farther. Francis and his companion began to walk on. Suddenly the wolf, jaws agape, charged out of the woods at the couple. Francis made the sign of the cross toward it. The power of God caused the wolf to slow down and to close its mouth. Then Francis called out to the creature: “Come to me, Brother Wolf. In the name of Christ, I order you not to hurt anyone.” At that moment the wolf lowered its head and lay down at Francis’ feet, meek as a lamb. “Brother Wolf,” said Francis, “I want to make peace between you and the people of Gubbio. They will harm you no more and you must no longer harm them. All past crimes are to be forgiven.” The wolf showed its assent by moving its body and nodding its head. Then to the absolute surprise of the gathering crowd, Francis asked the wolf to make a pledge. As Francis extended his hand to receive the pledge, the wolf extended its front paw and placed it into the saint’s hand. Then Francis commanded the wolf to follow him into town to make a peace pact with the townspeople. The wolf meekly followed Francis. By the time they got to the town square, everyone was there to witness the miracle. With the wolf at his side, Francis gave the town a sermon on the wondrous and fearful love of God, calling them to repent from all their sins. Then he offered the townspeople peace on behalf of the wolf. The townspeople promised in a loud voice to feed the wolf. Then Francis asked the wolf if he would live in peace under those terms. He bowed his head and twisted his body in a way that convinced everyone he accepted the pact. Then once again the wolf placed its paw in Francis’ hand as a sign of the pact. From that day on the people kept the pact they had made. The wolf lived for two years among the townspeople, going from door to door for food. It hurt no one and no one hurt it. Even the dogs did not bark at it. When the wolf finally died of old age, the people of Gubbio were sad. The wolf’s peaceful ways had been a living symbol of the power and providence of the living God. Most high and glorious God, come and enlighten the darkness of my heart. Give me right faith, certain hope, and perfect love, that everything I do may be in fulfilment of your holy will; through Jesus Christ my Lord. - St. Francis of Assisi Sunday Schedule for the Months of October & November 8-8:30 am Outdoor service of Holy Communion in the parking lot 9 am Morning Prayer on Zoom 9:30 am Zoom Coffee Hour 9:45 am Zoom Sunday School meets 10–10:30 am Zoom Sunday School Class 10:30-11:30am Distribution of Holy Communion in the church Sunday afternoon - Home Communion for those who cannot come to the church MORNING PRAYER via ZOOM The 4-legged, finned, & winged members of your family are welcome & we will bless them at the end of the service. Meditation for the Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost - September 27, 2020 Ted Loder, Waken in Me a Gratitude for My Life O God, complete the work you have begun in me. Release through me a flow of mercy and gentleness that will bring water where there is desert, healing where there is hurt, peace where there is violence, beauty where there is ugliness, justice where there is brokenness, beginnings where there are dead-ends. Waken in me gratitude for my life, love for every living thing, joy in what is human and holy praise for you. Renew my faith that you are God beyond my grasp but within my reach; past my knowing but within my searching; disturber of the assured, assurer of the disturbed destroyer of illusions, creator of dreams; source of silence and music, . . . sight and darkness, death and life. O Keeper of Promises, composer of grace, grant me glee in my blood, prayer in my heart, trust at my core, songs for my journey and a sense of your kingdom. Meditation for the Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost: Creation Season September 20, 2020 For you shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace. [Isaiah 55:12] Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal. [Arundhati Roy] The words that we hear from the prophet Isaiah this week were addressed to people in exile. This passage ends the middle section of Isaiah (Chapters 40-55), often called “Second Isaiah”, or the “exilic section.” The theme of this section is the righteous faithfulness of God when all semblance of order seems to have disappeared, when there seems to be no possibility of ever feeling “at home” in the world, when one’s only reference point is an idealized image of the past. To a people whose deepest longing was for a future that was exactly like what they remembered, the Lord says: My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways . . . for as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts [Isaiah 55:8-9]. At the same time God promises new life, just as the dawn follows night, harvest follows planting, and spring follows winter. These words are balm to our hearts today. They are both humbling and assuring: to believe in God is to be assured that good will come out of the most dire circumstances; at the same time, to believe is enter into a mystery that we will never understand. The only thing predictable about God is that we will never understand God’s ways and that God’s ways will always be life-giving. To believe in God is to let go of the expectation that God will do what we want. To believe in God is to trust in the depths of our being that God will do what we hope. Notice that God does not promise that exile will end with a return to the world as they knew it. God promises a new life. Just as today’s dawn is different from yesterday’s and the trees and flowers of every spring are not the same as what has blossomed in the past, so the future will be genuinely new. Although the time of exile is a time to mourn what is lost; it is also a time to prepare for a life we have never experienced. And so during this season of “exile” from the sacraments let us prepare for a life we have never known, for an abundance and joy and sense of relatedness that we were not capable of before the pandemic. Let us take advantage of this “portal” to become a more authentic witnesses to the Christ within and among us. Isaiah promises us that God will respond to our heart’s hunger, to our longing for peace and a sense of belonging. Our hunger will itself lead us on the path to joy and well-being. At the same time, the words of Isaiah call for a trust that requires tremendous courage. For to open our hearts to the real presence of God we must allow ourselves to feel the depth of our own longing and to acknowledge the times when we have mistaken junk food for the nourishment of God’s grace, when we have misplaced our trust and been betrayed. It means letting go of our personal conviction of what God should do. It means seeing each other anew. It means allowing ourselves to change. Bind us to you, O Lord, even when we are tempted to fall away, so we might witness to your faithfulness in your Spirit's power. Amen. -from Common Prayer MORNING PRAYER via ZOOM Vestry Forum following the Service Ministers of the Liturgy The Rev. Contributions to the US Disaster Response Fund will help provide support to people recovering from the wildfires and other natural disasters. e-blast Meditation for the Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost: Creation Season September 13, 2020 Finally beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. [Philippians 4:8] A saying by the Sufi poet Hafiz expresses well what we are learning during this Creation Season: Fear is the cheapest room in the house. I’d like to see you in better living conditions. By paying attention to the sacred order in the physical universe, as proclaimed in the opening lines of the Gospel of John that we read last week (In the beginning was the Word In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God), we will not cower in fear before the challenges of climate change and we will see more clearly the connections between environmental instability and social justice. We will recognize—anew—the times we have allowed others to live in fear by leaving them in “the cheapest room in the house.” We will pay attention to ways that Christ has disguised himself as he walks and lives and prays in our midst. On any given day, we are called upon to take a risk, perhaps to trust a God who has been silent in our lives, perhaps to trust someone who has not been reliable, perhaps to offer ourselves to someone who has not valued us. It is in taking this risk, remembering Christ is in our midst—disguised-- that we will move out of “the cheapest room in the house” and we will find the peace promised by Jesus. In the words of margaret Bullitt-Jones, Diocesan Missioner for Creeation Care: As for me, I draw strength from the living presence of Jesus Christ who is with us as we listen to Scripture, who comes to us as we sing and pray, whose love is poured into hearts through the power of the Holy Spirit, and who feeds and strengthens us when we stretch out our hands to receive the bread and wine of the Eucharist. Our fears can be strong, and the powers-that-be in this world are surely doing everything they can to stoke our fears of each other and to pull us apart, but Jesus’ words and presence convey bracing good news: we are infused and surrounded by a divine love that holds us together and that will never let us go. God loves us, and loves all Creation, with a love that nothing can destroy. As we breathe in that divine love and breathe it out in acts of healing and justice and compassion, our courage and strength are renewed. O God, by whom the meek are guided in judgment, and light rises up in darkness for the godly: Grant us, in all our doubts and uncertainties, the grace to ask what you would have us to do, that the Spirit of wisdom may save us from all false choices, and that in your light we may see light, and in your straight path may not stumble; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. MORNING PRAYER via ZOOM Prayers for our Music Ministry Ministers of the Liturgy The Rev. Meditation for the Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecos Creation Season Labor Day Backpack Blessings In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [John 1:1] Since early March we have been reminded every day that we share bonds with each other we may have ignored. We have been reminded every day that we pose a potential threat to each other, that our very breathing the same air or touching the same surfaces may cause each other harm. We have learned to express our love by keeping our distance and smiling at each other with our eyes. At the same time, we see churches around us opening for worship and we hear popular evangelical preachers proclaim that if we love and trust God we need not fear infection from the virus. To believe is to rebel against common sense and caution, they say. So this year Creation Season can be particularly meaningful. It begins with this passage from the Gospel of John proclaiming that God is present in the physical universe. Christ the Word is the incarnation of God. The Word is the Logos, the inherent order in the breathtakingly complex, diverse, unpredictable—and sacred-- universe. This statement is the foundation for all that we do. Each branch of Christianity places a different emphasis on the teachings of our tradition: At the center of some is the exalted Christ, of others it is Jesus our brother; at the center of some is God’s judgement, of others God’s mercy; at the center of some is the individual relationship with God, of others it is the relationship expressed in community. At the center of the Anglican tradition is the Incarnate God manifested in love shared in community. These different approaches are not mutually exclusive, of course, but they help to explain our different approaches to matters of church and politics. Our caution against public worship is based upon our incarnational theology as taught in the Gospels: Our social bonds are sacred because they reveal an Incarnate God; we live and act in solidarity with the most vulnerable because that is where God’s presence is often obscured; to love our enemies is to respect and guard against the dangers they pose; the Life we share will thrive only if we care for each other. What came into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. Our Life begins and ends in being faithful to the vision of beauty, order, and vitality called forth by the opening lines of John’s Gospel. Kenyan environmentalist Wangari Maathai, who founded the Greenbelt Movement in 1977, reminds us of the wonderful diversity of creatures with whom we share this Life: We need to rediscover our common experience with other creatures on Earth, and recognize that we have gone through an evolutionary process with them. They may not look like us, with their wings and scales and fur. We may not like some; others like mosquitoes we may detest. But they are part of the process of life beginning and being sustained on this planet. An apt analogy is Noah in Genesis, who found a pair of each species and two by two placed them into his ark, mosquitoes and reptiles among them. Noah was not commanded to pick only those that were useful to him; he shelter them all. God recognize that they are part of us; they needed the chance to survive as well. And in giving them this chance, God gave us a chance too. Now we must give that chance back to ourselves, and replenish the earth. quoted in God’s Good Earth, ed. Anne and Jeffrey Rowthorn, pp.332-333] Living God, you accept our stumbling faith, our misplaced answers, our false horizons, and through them build a way of peace: empower us to bind the wounds of the world and loose the debts of oppression, that all may confess the grace that is your work alone. -from Prayers for an Inclusive Church MORNING PRAYER via ZOOM Ministers of the Liturgy The Rev. Meditation for the Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost August 30, 2020 Thus you shall say to the Israelites, “The LORD, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God if Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is my name forever, and this is my title for all generations. [Exodus 3:15] On Sunday we will hear the story of the burning bush, a story so familiar that we may have stopped listening to it. Most of us cannot remember not knowing this story, even if different images from it may stand out at different times. We watch Moses suddenly mesmerized by the sight of the bush that is on fire but not being destroyed; we imagine the voice of a God as disturbing as it is comforting, a God who is unfathomably faithful and at the same time ever surprising. We share Moses’ speechless astonishment that the God he has heard about since he was a boy is indeed real, and present, and ready to act. With Moses, we ask “Who am I?” This story teaches us that “Someday” is today. Today—not some idealized tomorrow—we are called to put aside our fear and our complacency. Today we are called to remember that our history and our hope stretch from Abraham to beyond our youngest grandchild. Today we are called to pay attention to the bush burning beside our path. In reflecting on this week’s Scripture, I returned to some advice from Phillips Brooks, the Rector of Trinity Church in Boston and Bishop of Massachusetts in the 19th century (perhaps best known for writing the lyrics to “O Little Town of Bethlehem.”: Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers. Pray for powers equal to your tasks! Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle. But you shall be a miracle. Every day you shall wonder at yourself, at the richness of life which has come to you by the grace of God. Living God, you accept our stumbling faith, our misplaced answers, our false horizons, and through them build a way of peace: empower us to bind the wounds of the world and loose the debts of oppression, that all may confess the grace that is your work alone. -from Prayers for an Inclusive Church MORNING PRAYER via ZOOM Ministers of the Liturgy The Rev. Meditation for the Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost August 23, 2020 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Matthew 16:18-19] As I reflected on today’s readings, I kept returning to what we call the butterfly effect: Just as the flapping of a butterfly’s wings can affect the timing of a tornado, our smallest acts can have unanticipated transformative effects on the world. In words that will be echoed in his farewell to his disciples (Matthew 28:16-20), Jesus teaches them that the smallest human action has cosmic consequences. Celtic mythology and spirituality speak of a “thin place” where the boundary between the natural and the supernatural—between heaven and earth—is blurred or even disappears. Celtic storytellers from ancient times have told stories of people who have entered the “thin place” and encountered faeries and beings of the Other World. The “thin place” is a boundary land, not visible to ordinary sight. One finds oneself there without knowing how one arrived. In Celtic Christianity, the church is that “thin place” where divine and human meet. In naming Peter, Jesus calls him, and all of us, to embody that “thin place.” This is what he means when he speaks the words that have so often been used to elevate clerical authority: I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. [Matthew 16:19] Jesus’ words here are indeed momentous. He is telling Peter—and us--that we ourselves are the holy ground where God’s truth will be revealed. He is telling us that it is up to us to create the place where someone can enter into a new relationship with God. It is up to us to create a space where someone can be vulnerable enough to be surprised by the wonder of grace. He is telling us that we ourselves are free to open the way between heaven and earth as naturally as a butterfly flaps its wings. Almighty God, Creator: The morning is yours, rising into fullness. The summer is yours, dipping into autumn. Eternity is yours, dipping into time. The vibrant grasses, the scent of flowers, the lichen on the rocks, the tang of seaweed. All are yours. Gladly we live in this garden of your creating. Amen. MORNING PRAYER via ZOOM Ministers of the Liturgy The Rev. Dr. Judith Lee Members of the Altar Guild: Mary-Ellen Yaroshefski, Allison Kee, Lisa Ruggiero, Mary Torian Musicians: Randolph Bloom, Jeff Lukas I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God-- what is good and acceptable and perfect.
